I plan to run 20K (12.4 mi) on March 10 to raise money for Mission Mid-Atlantic. Mission Mid-Atlantic is a regional fellowship of Conservative Baptist Churches and exists for four reasons.

• Develop new churches.
• Cultivate church leaders.
• Build healthy churches
• Assist pastors and churches in crisis.

Here are several ways you can participate.

NCMAF Military Endorser's Conference

I am attending the NCMAF Military Endorser's Conference in Alexandria, VA this week. This is my first time attending this kind of event and I look forward to spending time with Al Russell, Director of Chaplaincy for CBAmerica.This will also be a special event due to the recent changes within the military related to Don't Ask Don't Tell. There is great concern about how these changes will impact our Chaplains who hold to deep Biblical convictions. I will send additional posts via my blog as well as through Twitter (@jimleary) as I learn more. This should be a fun and interesting week.

Is There A Good Way To Die?

We just learned that a friend died last October. He moved to Florida and Lou Ann and I had not been in contact with him for a couple years.We discovered that he had leukemia for two years and didn't tell his family until two weeks prior to his death. This is the second friend we lost recently under similar circumstances.

We have no right to judge how someone chooses to die. However, after learning about Tom's death, I am struggling with the following question. Is there a good way to die?

We have friends right now who are struggling with this question. And since I spend alot of time on the road, I realize that my life could end any moment at the hands of someone texting while driving or worse. I hope my death is quick and as painless as possible if that should happen.

If I were diagnosed with a terminal illness, I think I would want to spend as much time as possible with those I love, rejoicing in the good times, remembering God's goodness and laughing as much as possible.

I think that is a good way to die.

As we look forward to 2012 at Mission Mid-Atlantic, it is with heartfelt gratitude to the Conservative Baptist community for sustaining the worthwhile work that has helped so many churches during the past year. With a generous gift from Mission Mid-Atlantic, Poplar Ridge Community Church in Sutton, WV, made some major modifications to their church building. As a result, they established a Sunday school ministry in their community where none has previously existed. Your gifts have also expanded the ministry of New Beginnings Christian Life Fellowship in Reading, PA, as they installed a sound system in their new church building.

Through God’s grace, our region continues to move forward in every area. Four churches in New Jersey and one in Pennsylvania welcomed new senior pastors in 2011. Numerous hours were invested consulting with pastors and churches in our region. Sometimes this involved next step coaching, other times walking together through a crisis. Relationships with potential church planters continue to grow, and the potential for developing a church planter pipeline in the Mid-Atlantic region is on the horizon. Thanks to pastors from the NJ Central Shore area, our Men’s Retreat was resurrected in October, and plans are already in place for the fall of 2012. Our commitment to nurture healthy churches that multiply more healthy churches stands firm.

As we look toward Mission Mid-Atlantic’s future, we realize that your generosity has brought us such a great distance – will you continue to help us serve our churches? Your support will help us strengthen our local churches by bringing relevant trainings and workshops to each area in our region. Trainings such as Relational Leaders Training, Resolving Conflicting Biblically, Best Practices of Healthy Churches, and Stewardship Principles. 9/11 Thoughts

This September weremember the 10th Anniversary of 9/11. I am experiencing a flood of memories asI prepare to speak at Stagecoach Road Christian Fellowship this Sunday on the eventssurrounding that fateful day.

9/11/01 began as a normal day for me. Lou Ann and I fasted from TV the previousmonth and had not turned it on that morning. I sat at my computer in mybasement office when a member of our church called and asked if I was watchingTV. She then told me that a plane hit the first tower. I ran upstairs, turnedon the TV and saw the images that are engraved in all our memories. I alsowatched as another plane hit the second tower. A short time later Iwitnessed with millions of others the images of the two towers collapsing intomultiple stories of rubble.

About a month later I had the privilege to visit Ground Zero with the CriticalStress Management Team out of the NJ Port Authority. During the ride in the vanto the disaster site I listened to amazing stories as my fellow team members describedvarious experiences while assisting first responders. Once chaplain inparticular told us about giving crosses he had in his pocket to crane operatorshe was trying to encourage. He also told us that he called his wife and toldher he had given his crosses away. She told him that he had left the crosses athome and that they were on his dresser. This was only one of many amazingstories from Ground Zero.

One of myresponsibilities at Ground Zero was to pray with first responders as theyremoved bodies from the pile. When another body was found, our team quicklymoved to the entrance to meet the team as they removed the body from the pile.The first responders paused with the body draped in the American flag and weprayed together. We prayed for the family whose loved one was covered with theflag. We also prayed for the first responders as they continued their searchfor other bodies lying beneath the rubble. During those moments I felt thepresence of God as I never have before. It was as if God was revealing Hispresence in a special way in the midst of extreme devastation.

The tenth anniversary of9/11 reminds me that in spite of what terrorists did to our country on thatday, the Gospel remains of first importance. This is what the Apostle Paul declaredin 1 Cor. 15:3 For I delivered to you asof first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins inaccordance with the Scriptures.

We want to thank you forall you are doing to support the work of the Gospel. May God continue to blessyour efforts as we share in this great work together.

Dear CBGlobal Family,

Greetings in the name of our Saviour and Lord!

You are all aware of the massive earthquake, then tsunami, continuing aftershocks, and now the nuclear reactor problems that happened in Japan . It is all over the internet and the television.

FIRST AND FOREMOST, we covet your prayers for all those who have been directly affected and for the government and the Japanese people as they gather resources and work together along with all volunteer helps from all over the globe. Pray specially for our CB churches who are in the affected areas.

SECONDLY, we wish to appeal to all of our CBGlobal members for financial help in behalf of our brethren and churches in Japan . They need all the assistance that they could get to reconstruct their homes and church buildings on top of rebuilding their broken spirits.

CHURCHES

We have about 80 CB churches in Japan , a majority of which are located in the NorthEast region where the disaster happened. More than 30 of these churches are within a 60- mile radius of the epicentre of the earthquake. Pray specially for these following areas:

1. Kurihara City - we have two churches here and this is nearest to the epicenter.

2. Kessenuma City - this is the city that is in flames and we have two churches here.

3. Natori City - this is where the tsunami inundated the farm land. We have a church here as well.

4. Fukushima City - there is a CB church within 5 kilometers from the nuclear reactor. The people in the area were all evacuated. There is a possibility the church will stop meeting due to the evacuation.

5. Five CB churches in Miyagi Prefecture , namely those in Kesen-numa, Ishino-maki, Ohfunato and Natori cities could not be contacted. Broadcast says the tsunami killed many lives in the area.

CBAmerica Update 2011

I am often asked about where CBAmerica is headed. Here is a brief summary of recent events. Hope it is helpful.

In 2002, the National Coordinating Council made up of key leaders from the various CB entities, issued a “Call for Change Among the Conservative Baptist Family.” Citing our strong heritage of biblical integrity, missionary zeal and passion for the local church, the council observed signs of plateau, and even decline (January 2002). Two task forces were created to address the concerns and to propose “radical solutions to assure a healthy and bright future together.”

After diligent and sacrificial labor by the two Task Forces, a Vision Summit was called in Littleton, CO (September 10, 2003). Forty-two CB leaders representing the numerous CB entities gathered to hear the reports and recommendations. It seemed that the endeavors would continue and result in the desired outcomes.

The NCC met in Portland, OR, and received the final report from the Doctrinal Task Force (October 27, 2003). The report was received, and the NCC voted to conclude the work of the task force, “sensing that the Task Force had substantially fulfilled its purpose.” As stated in the Final Report from the Council dated November 28, the churches and agencies in the CB family will continue to be guided by the doctrinal statements currently in use.

In the same report, the Council announced that the Organizational Task Force recommended dissolution due to “inability to make progress on a plan to consolidate CB ministries.” The report went on to say, “The spiritual and relational challenges we face as a CB movement will not be solved by structural changes. Nor will greater ministry be advanced by a centralized leadership structure. The challenge is to strengthen the ties between our churches in regional associations and resource those regions to effectively serve our churches. The pledge of the schools is to come alongside the local church to help equip the next generation of leaders. The mission agencies renewed their dedication to sacrificially serve CB churches in the realization of their global witness.”

Following the dissolution of the task forces, the CBAmerica Board met and made significant decisions (January 28, 2004). It ratified the Mission, Vision and Values Document that was developed in concert with the Organizational Task Force and the Regional Directors. Next, it empowered the Regional Directors to develop a “new day for CBA.” Further, it resolved that in the change process, the existing uniqueness of each region, including millennial positions, would be honored. Finally, a resolution prevailed that linked CBAmerica with the CB churches in the Philippines on specific issues of Biblical inerrancy.

The CBAmerica Board of Directors met later in the year and voted to accept the recommendations of the Transitional Leadership Team, including the new paradigm of relationships, the new organizational structure, the new model of ministry, and a new National Director, Dr. Stephen LeBar (June 24, 2004).

On March 17, 2005, the Regional Directors met in Chicago, functioning as the CBAmerica Transitional Leadership Team. At this meeting a new paradigm for CBAmerica was envisioned. The new model is a Fellowship of Regions, bound together by mutual and accountable privileges and responsibilities. The Regions share core values, mission and vision. Relationships among the Directors and among the Regions are covenantal, with mutual submission to the greater good of the whole. The Regional Directors are the national coordinators of service to and among the local churches. The National CBAmerica office serves as the hub of operations and networks among the Regions. The New Purpose Statement was summarized by the following statement: CBAmerica exists to serve, resource and represent regional fellowships of Conservative Baptist churches. The New Model was summarized as church driven through Regional Ministry Hubs.

In 2008, the Board directed the REDs to continue the development of the new paradigm. It was during that process that Dr. Stephen Lebar felt led to resign.

During 2008 through 2009 the REDs met on numerous occasions to further develop the new paradigm. In January, 2010, the REDs presented the paradigm to the CBAmerica Board that included a plurality of leaders led by a team of REDS in cooperation with a catalyst. The transitional team identified to test this new paradigm included Dr. Bert Downs as Catalyst, Dr. James E. Leary as Connector, and Stan Rieb serving as Network Facilitator. 2010 served as a test period to determine if and how the new paradigm worked.

The new paradigm was officially presented, voted and approved by the board at the Winter Board Meeting in January 2011. This official recommendation served to present to our associational churches the constitutional changes necessary to formalize the new paradigm. One RED summarized the constitutional changes presented by the board in the following manner: “Men who are leading CBAmerica have sought the mind of God together and have developed a paradigm to address the dysfunctions of previous generations without having to fight about it.”

Decisions Define Us

I have not always made good decisions. Some were really bad, like when I gave Lou Ann a bird feeder for Christmas. Yeah, I really did that. I am thankful she never used the bird feeder against me nor allowed that to define our marriage.

Since decisions define who we are as leaders, the ability to make good ones is an indispensable skill. Decision making often falls into four distinct categories and this awareness helps leaders who want to improve their capacity to choose wisely.

Decisions due to default are made by leaders who allow others to decide for them. They pass the buck by saying the issue is outside their realm of responsibility or they choose to ignore. In either case they have to live with the consequences even when they don’t like them. Decisions due to default reflect poor leadership skills because leaders never truly lead.

Decisions made with haste are made without an appropriate amount of reflection and leaders use this decision making process when they think a conclusion is needed quickly and speed is essential. Tim Pollard, Vice President of Peacemaker Ministries, often observes that speed is overrated. Hasty decisions lack the wise counsel needed from others familiar with the situation.

Decisions through ignorance are made when leaders think they know enough to decide on their own. One wise individual noted that we don’t know enough about something to know what we don’t know. When an organization is led by those who make decisions through ignorance, the organization is headed for significant trouble. Decisions are being made without knowledge and the church or organization suffers.

Decisions by reflection are those that are deliberately designed to achieve maximum influence within churches and Christian organizations. These have been made after careful thought and with significant input and wise counsel about the total situation. President George W. Bush, in Decision Points, makes this observation about how he made an important decision by reflection about stem cells while in the White House. “I told Margaret and Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Bolten that I considered this a far-reaching decision. I laid out a process for making it. I would clarify my guiding principles, listen to experts on all sides of the debate, reach a tentative conclusion, and run it past knowledgeable people. After finalizing a decision, I would explain it to the American people. Finally, I would set up a process to ensure that my policy was implemented.” (Decision Points, Page 110-111)

Most will never have to make decisions that impact millions of people like the President of the United States. However, we are confronted every day with making decisions that may impact lives for eternity and that should give us pause. What is the process you follow when you make difficult decisions? A church is like a symphony

A church is like a symphony. When the ensemble is properly tuned, the music is pleasing to the ear and everyone enjoys the performance. If not, as during the pre-concert tuning, there is too much dissonance and it will be impossible for the concert to go on as planned. In a similar manner, when members of a church are not in tune with one another, it is highly unlikely that any growth will take place.

Throughout this year, I spent many late nights in meetings with pastors, leaders and church members that were filled with intense communication and emotions. As I drove home from these meetings, I often asked, “Why am I doing this?” The reason is simple. I love God’s people and His church.

During this Christmas season, we are reminded that God also loves people and His church. As His Son entered the world to bring hope through the Gospel, He made it possible for the message of salvation to be proclaimed to the lost. He also made it possible, through the Gospel, to see hearts changed and relationships reconciled. We at Mission Mid-Atlantic are privileged to serve churches throughout the region because we believe that the message of the Gospel also includes the power to reconcile relationships and turn churches toward greater effectiveness. As we serve our churches, it is often through conflict coaching and mediation. Praise God that most of these meetings end with reconciliation and restored relationships! We are working with churches that are struggling through transition and change. As a result, churches that were once about to close their doors are now thriving and growing. We are also engaged in working with healthy churches in leadership development, strategic planning, vision casting, coaching, and training. Our strategic efforts to plant new churches are coming to fruition as churches step forward and church planters are deployed. We are honored to serve our churches and the many people behind the scenes that make them work.

West Virgina Hunting Trip

I returned last evening from a great trip to WVA to hunt with my brother Greg. He built a cabin on top of a mountain bordering Kumbrabow State Forest and this pic was taken from his cabin window Wednesday evening. We watched these three does for over an hour waiting for a buck to visit them. Unfortunately, he didn't show so I will have to try again next year.

Assessing the overall health of your church can seem like a daunting task that raises more questions than it answers: How do we go about it? Do we need outside help? How long will it take? What will we do with the results? But not all churches need or have the ability to complete an in-depth, comprehensive church health assessment. Sometimes asking simple diagnostic questions can bring valuable insight into the state of church health and corrective action steps to consider.

With a hat tip to CB Northwest for turning us on to this topic, we present a quick and easy way to make an initial evaluation of relative church health that may prove to be a helpful tool for discussion with your leadership team.

Ask yourself and your team, “Are we an A, B, C or D church?”

“A” churches are Already _____________ (you fill in the blank). These are churches that are already on a specific, well-defined mission that is their version of living out the great commandment and great commission in the place and for the people where God has them. It could mean that they are already planting or preparing to plant a daughter congregation, already involved in a well-defined outreach endeavor into their community, already reaching business people, or school-age kids or some other specific age or stage target. But whatever their unique mission is, “A” churches can confidently say, “We are already actively involved in achieving it.”

“B” churches are Becoming interested in ________________ (you fill in the blank). These are churches that are investigating, evaluating and counting the cost of a major shift in emphasis or embracing a new church-wide strategy for greater ministry impact. They may be becoming interested in a new type of worship service, or planting a church, or a wholly new outreach strategy, or reaching a new demographic target. But whatever gets put in the blank, these are churches that desire to do whatever it takes to pursue their god-given mission and are open to embracing the necessary change(s) to get there. “B” churches are not content with the status-quo.

“C” churches are Change resistant. These are churches that may see the need for adopting new strategies and methods but various factors cause them to be resistant to embracing the necessary change(s) to put them on a more effective ministry footing. They may be stuck in a rut of always doing things a certain way, or they may be so internally focused that church activities are designed entirely for members with no realistic effort or resources committed to reaching new people and leading them to faith.

“D” churches are Dead or dying. As strong a statement as that sounds, some churches have been in gradual decline for so long that, absent an intentional shift in strategy, they will eventually die out. The first step in addressing the needs of a dead or dying church is to acknowledge and own up to their true condition so corrective action steps can be considered.

Why Assign a Letter to My Church?

What’s the value in assigning a letter grade to your church? Knowing where you are is the first step in determining where you need to go. Getting a leadership team to a point of consensus as to whether a church can best be described as A, B, C or D can be an enlightening exercise in and of itself. Once you’ve (hopefully) reached agreement, the next step usually takes the form of asking, “What do we need to do to move to the next level? If we acknowledge we are change resistant, what can we do to put ourselves on a path to become interested in something greater, something new?” What would have to happen to move from “B” to “A”, etc?

Soul Care Issue #3: I Need What I Don't Want

Another soul care issue I struggle with is needing what I don’t want. I need a relationship with Christ but don’t always want it, and this is the struggle that Paul describes in Romans 7. This is also a very real struggle in my life.

This conflict is rooted in the Garden of Eden, where Adam and Eve didn’t want what they needed either, and this ultimately led to the Fall. Adam and Eve lived in an intimate relationship with God where they walked in fellowship with Him. All that was needed was obedience where their one prohibition was to not eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. What they needed is not what they chose. Instead, they disobeyed and were cast out of the Garden. This is the point where most of my struggles originate and I don’t want what I need either. If I did, I wouldn’t struggle with sinful choices.

1 John 2: 5 – 17: Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world – the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life – is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

The hard work of soul care in my life includes remembering that I will not always want what I need. I must make soul decisions based upon what I need, not what I want and deciding between the two often means discerning what is good, acceptable and perfect in His sight.

Soul Care Issue #2: I have what I don’t need

While visiting our son’s home one evening, I played with Braydon, our grandson, while Lou Ann helped in the kitchen. Braydon has a lot of Matchbox cars and they were scattered all over the floor. I said to Braydon, “You really have a lot of cars.” Without hesitation he said, “I need more.” Even at the young age of three, Braydon has become infected by materialism and I suffer from the same.

Having what I don’t need is a soulcare issue, for what I treasure will be reflected in how I spend my time and my money. What are some signs that I may suffer from a materialistic mindset? According to Tim Kasser, in The High Price of Materialism, here are some possible signs. Kasser says you may be materialistic if your feelings of personal worth are based on how much money you have or on how much stuff you have. He also observed that merely aspiring to have greater wealth or more possessions is likely to be associated with personal unhappiness. And, people with materialistic values report more symptoms of anxiety, greater risk of depression, and are more irritable than those less materialistic

In contrast, the writer of Proverbs made the following observation. (Proverbs 11:24-26): “There is one who scatters, yet increases more; and there is one who withholds more than is right. But it leads to poverty. The generous soul will be made rich, and he who waters will also be watered himself. The people will curse him who withholds grain, but blessing will be on the head of him who sells it.”

A generous spirit is the solution to materialism. Am I generous with my time, talents and treasures? This soulcare issue needs my constant attention.

Soul Care Issue #1: I want what I cannot have

Care of the soul is essential for Christian leaders and we nurture others but often neglect our own soul needs. Here is one significant soulcare issue for me. I want what I cannot have. Desiring what I cannot have leads to sinful choices and significant conflict in my relationships.

The Preacher also experienced this. Ecclesiastes 2:10 – ff: Whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them. I did not withhold my heart from any pleasure. For my heart rejoiced in all my labor; and this was my reward from all my labor. He could have whatever he wanted and his experience is an example of entitlement thinking.

In his book, Steering Clear, Earl Wilson observed that entitlement thinking usually begins with a simple thought. I deserve to be able to do this. He noted that this justification takes either a positive or negative bent; I deserve this because I have done so much good (positive entitlement), or I deserve this because I have been treated so poorly (negative entitlement). Entitlement is a deep-seated belief that I am special and above the rules, and also that I should be treated as special and should never have to endure hardships that others endure. As a character issue, entitlement falls somewhere between selfishness and arrogance. Simply stated, entitlement includes giving yourself permission to do things that will bring great harm to God, to those you love and to yourself. (Steering Clear: Avoiding the Slippery Slope to Moral Failure. Downers Grove: Intervarsity Press, 2002)

Scripture also illustrates why we must guard against entitlement thinking. Jeremiah 17:9 notes the following: The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately sick; who can understand it? I must guard my heart against wanting what I cannot have, for when I think I deserve certain things or special treatment, I am sliding down the slippery slope of conflict.

Dont Look Up When Geese Fly By!

One day, as I walked to the mailbox in front of our house, a flock of geese flew overhead and I looked up as they passed by. As I watched the geese fly overhead in formation, I became disoriented and walked right into the back of our car. Because I didn’t pay attention to where I was going, I forgot about the car and I am really glad no one was watching! This embarrassing incident taught me an important lesson.

Don’t look up when geese fly by!

Our culture offers many opportunities to compromise our convictions and these distractions are presented to us in every form of media. The challenge is to discern what is healthful and to reject what is harmful. As we do so, we maintain our integrity.

When I am aware of these challenges to integrity, I am ready to accept the Apostle Paul's goal for my own life: "I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 3.14, NKJV). Paul desired to live a godly life and was familiar with the dangers of drifting. He realized how easy it was to take his eyes off the goal of a life of integrity before God.

Many have allowed themselves to be distracted by the Internet and have indulged in all kinds of pornography. This has reached epidemic proportions and my advice is simple. When you are tempted to indulge, shut down the computer and leave the room immediately.

One day, while I was running near the Whitman Elementary School in our neighborhood, I saw a pornographic magazine lying on the sidewalk. I was so offended by the images that I felt sick in my stomach and wondered to myself, "Why would someone leave this in plain view of the children walking to and from school?"

I was also faced with a challenge. Should I leave the magazine on the sidewalk? No, I couldn’t do that because children would see it and I wanted to make sure that didn’t happen. Should I pick it up and take it with me? I didn't want to touch it. Instead, I kicked the magazine into the woods and covered it up with leaves. That solved the problem.

Remember when you are tempted. Don’t look up when geese fly by!

Abandon Ship or Adapt?

As a pastor, I met many people at the door after worship each Sunday. One particular Sunday stands out as a memorable one. A member of our church introduced me to a pastor he brought to church with him.

“I told my church that if we had one more problem,” he said, “I would leave. We had one more problem and I left.” I was initially surprised by his honesty. Upon further reflection, the majority of Christian leaders identify with him. We deal with a similar urge.

The nature of Christian ministry makes it demanding work. Most Christian leaders wear many hats. Add the expectations of others, and serving is not easy. Factor in other variables of ministry and you have the perfect recipe for frustration. What do you do when you can't take anymore? The solution often is to abandon ship.

There is another answer: Adapt to the situation at hand. Some problems that appear unsolvable are not so. Learn, instead, to adjust your conflict-handling style to cope with the circumstances. On occasion leadership must change. More often, however, a transformation needs to occur within the leader. Drs. Kenneth O. Gangel and Samuel L. Canine make this observation in Communication and Conflict Management in Churches and Christian Organizations: "We can best find the source of human relations problems by looking in a mirror, not across the counseling desk."

Conflict is normal in life and ministry. Speed Leas observed in his consulting practice with churches that the pastor’s interpersonal competence was the subject of 46% of the cases. What can we learn from this? Christian leaders frequently deal with differences and disputes.

When faced with conflict, occasionally I respond in an unsuitable manner. I reach the boiling point. My chest tightens, my face turns red and I might raise my voice. Is this healthy? Not usually. Instead, I can learn to adapt to the challenges I face daily in ministry.

One way to adapt is to stop avoiding conflict. Unfortunately, problems don’t usually disappear by themselves. Issues need to be faced and problems solved. This is a fact of life. The sooner issues are addressed, the faster things will quiet down.

Compromise is sometimes necessary. "Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others" (Philippians 2.4). Those who lead from time to time find this easier said than done. Since we work with others, we should seek to negotiate intelligently.

Because most serve in ministry voluntarily, fitting in is important. We nurture this by encouraging others to participate. Most people like their opinions and suggestions to be considered. Understanding this helps us to be tolerant of other viewpoints.

Strong leaders, however, frequently find it difficult to balance assertiveness with sensitivity. As a result, while attempting to move the ministry forward, they alienate others with their over-bearing personality. Learning to balance boldness with compassion strengthens this leadership style.

Collaborating with others is another means of adapting. This simply means to work together. In the New Testament, Paul referred to many as his co-laborers. He knew the value of serving with others. His ministry grew stronger when others shared in the effort. He realized that God's plan included working as a team, and not alone.

We face tremendous challenges in life and ministry. How we handle them determines whether we will abandon ship or adapt. As we manage conflict in a healthful manner, we glorify Christ. May God grant the wisdom needed to face today’s challenges in a way that honors Him.

How to manage a lousy attitude

Today is my first day back in the office after two tremendous weeks of travel. I attended a Regional Director's meeting in Colorado Springs two weeks ago, and participated in Instructor's Training in Billings, Montana with Peacemaker Ministries last week. To say I have been living a mountain top experience is an understatement.

I read an article in the United Magazine "Hemispheres" about PTF (Post Trip Funk) while flying to and from Montana. This is a great article about what happens to many who return home from a really good trip and I think I experienced PTF yesterday.

Even though I was glad to be home, especially to see Lou Ann, I still woke up in a bad mood. Not to make excuses, but I got home after 11 pm and unpacked prior to going to bed. Maybe I should have saved that till later.

In any case, I didn't arrive at church feeling the joy of the Lord! I think I crashed emotionally sometime during our worship team rehearsal, and I felt like a hypocrite as I played bass during the worship set.

Here are three things I learned about my lousy attitude.

1. I don't know who said it, but it applied to my attitude. "Give others the sunshine, tell the rest to Jesus." When I am in a bad mood, no one needs to know. I can choose to keep it to myself.

2. When I have a lousy attitude, I must not act upon my feelings. I need to guard against impulsiveness when I think this way because if I don't, I will regret the outcome.

3. I must continually pray for an attitude change and the renewal of my mind is essential when I am in a bad mood.

Romans 12: 2: "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."

A lousy attitude doesn't prove what is good and acceptable and perfect because it is all about me. When it is all about me, that is when an attitude adjustment is most needed.

I pray that I will remember these thoughts the next time I have a lousy attitude. May they be helpful to you also.

The Perfect Response to the Almost Perfect Game

The recent debacle regarding the Perfect Game that almost was is a teaching moment for us all. When Armando Galarraga, the pitcher, touched first base for the final out, the entire stadium erupted. The tone quickly changed when Jim Joyce, the umpire, called the runner safe at first. That ended any possibility of a perfect game for this young pitcher. In an interview following the game, Joyce admitted that he robbed the pitcher of his perfect game, and he did so with tears running down his cheeks.

We knew we were dealing with someone special by the look on Galarraga's face after the terrible call. Cabrera, the second baseman, looked like he wanted to kill the ump. Galarraga, on the other hand, simply stood in disbelief. Jim Leyland, the manager, quickly ran to the ump to argue that the ruling be overturned. He was not successful.

We had further proof the next day. When the time came for the game to begin, Jim Leyland didn't deliver the lineup card to Jim Joyce, who was now behind home plate. It was Galarraga, the pitcher who was robbed of his perfect game. And when Joyce took the card from Galarraga, he had tears in his eyes, for he knew that it was his bad call that ruined the perfect game.

There are some teachable moments here for us all. This pitcher could have argued that he had been wronged, but he didn't. Instead, when he was wronged, he responded with grace and mercy toward the umpire. Also, when he was interviewed later, he recognized that mistakes are made in life and that even umpires are human. It was clear to everyone that he didn't harbor bitterness toward the ump.

How different than many ballfields around the country on any given evening. Parents all too often teach their children the roots of bitterness and self-centeredness by choosing a different path when mistakes are made or when wronged. They respond with a bitter spirit if a call doesn't go their way, and their example empowers their children to sulk and pout when they feel mistreated. The same is even true in many of our churches, as members who feel wronged or mistreated choose the path of anger or bitterness when things don't go their way.

Here is a radical thought. The next time you are wronged, don't cry foul. Instead, choose the path of grace and mercy shown to us by this young pitcher.

By the way, his perfect response to loosing the perfect game reminds us of someone even greater. Jesus, when He was mistreated, responded in the following manner. "He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth" (Isaiah 53:7).

The fact that history will record one less perfect game is truly unfortunate. However, we are left with the example of the perfect response that reminds us that life is filled with mistakes and missed opportunities. We choose, however, how we will respond when it happens to us. When we wronged or mistreated, we can harbor bitterness and refuse to forgive or we can instead respond with grace and mercy.

I just discovered a unique video chat service called Tokbox (www.tokbox.com). Tokbox has both free and premium services and allows you to communicate with contacts in a number of creative ways. You can start a video chat with a contact, schedule a video chat (Premium service), broadcast a video chat and even send video messages via email.

One potential use of Tokbox for ministry is the ability to gather teams together for video chats and eliminate the need for team members to travel to a central location for a meeting. Tokbox is a great tool for teams because it allows for groups of up to 20 people to video chat together. In addition, sending video email messages through Tokbox increases your ability to communicate with others in ways that are limited by email alone. Churches and ministry leaders are also using Tokbox for Bible studies and other types of training.

"Live" Broadcasting of the 2010 Mission Mid-Atlantic Annual Conference

Call For Decency

My wife tells me that I often act like my Father. I admit that I struggle with a lot that I see and hear today because things are not like they used to be. A visit to a convenience store this morning explains why I am fighting the changes.

I stopped on my way to the office today to purchase some gum. As I waited to pay, I noticed a man in front of me wearing his jeans like a lot of young men do today. There is even a song written about the trend called “Pants on the Ground.” I relate to what that guy was trying to say and think he was right on.

I didn’t think much of it until the man bent over to pick up a little girl beside him. To my surprise, his boxers had also dropped to where his jeans were and his buttocks were exposed. TOTALLY. I wanted to say something but didn’t trust what I might have said. Instead, to my shame, I looked away.

Very carefully, I looked back a minute or so later and it appeared that he finally pulled something up, although I am not sure if it was the boxers ONLY or the boxers AND the jeans. It didn’t matter as long as he was covered up.

He finally paid his bill and walked away, apparently happy with his purchase but saying nothing to us behind him who saw his behind.

What I saw in the convenience store this morning was a revelation to me. This trend is like alot of changes that we are seeing in our culture today. It is not about cultural changes or even personal preferences. Instead, it is about decency and a departure from Biblical values.

2010 Mission Mid-Atlantic Pre-Conference Information

The 2010 Mission Mid-Atlantic Annual Conference begins on the evening of April 23 with a time of worship and inspiration at Grace Baptist Church in Lancaster, PA starting at 7:00 PM. Worship will be led by New Beginnings Christian Life Fellowship, Mission Mid-Atlantic's newest Affiliated Church. New Beginnings Christian Life Fellowship is a new church plant in Reading, PA. Pastor Raymond Bland and his congregation are an energetic group and we are sure this evening of worship will be a blessing to all who attend. Dr. E. Glenn Wagner will also share some words of encouragement related to Transformational Leadership, our theme for the weekend. There is still time to register for this weekend of fellowship and renewal. Our Keynote Speaker for our 2010 Conference is Dr. E. Glenn Wagner. Glenn is a dynamic, innovative leader and pastor with more than 30 years of ministerial leadership demonstrating a heart for God’s people and a passion for Kingdom growth. Having served as senior pastor to four congregations, he has become a catalyst for multicultural worship, church vision, health and growth, debt elimination, and ministry development and implementation.

His passion for the training and development of people, especially pastors, has made him an influential and well sought-after speaker for a variety of settings and conferences throughout the country and abroad. Over the course of his career, Dr. Wagner has served as an adjunct professor or lecturer at six universities and seminaries including Philadelphia Biblical University, Western Seminary and Oxford Graduate School. He is a founding board member and former vice president of Promise Keepers, Inc., where he led the national and international expansion efforts, helping the organization attain double-digit growth for six straight years. As a result of his extensive experience, he now specializes in helping struggling churches achieve aggressive growth and health.

Dr. Wagner is not only a teacher, but also a powerful visionary and author.
